10 years later...

I love the life we've built together and I can't imagine going on this journey with anyone else.  Happy Anniversary.  I love you more than ever.

My Mom sent us an anniversary card with this quote, I think its perfect and it made me chuckle:

"A wedding anniversary is the celebration of love, trust, partnership, tolerance and tenacity.  The order varies for any given year."  - Paul Sweeney

last day of preschool

Today was Logan's last day of preschool.  Its been a great year, and I have to say, we've been so proud of how he's handled his very first school experience.  His teachers and the school were just incredible, and it was so rewarding being room mom and being able to be very involved in his class.  He never complained once that he didn't want to go to school, he looked forward to it every day and was so proud to show us everything he made.
This morning, Andrew made him a special pancake breakfast on our 'special day' plate my friend Sharon made me before she moved to Germany.  We use it for family birthdays and special celebrations.

This was Logan last September on his very first day of preschool:

And here he is this morning.  I swear he grew 6 inches... you don't realize how much they change until you look at old photos.

To celebrate the last day, his class had a picnic this afternoon.  Here he is with his two teachers:

The teachers gave me and the other room mom these bags with all of the kids handprints on them.  Not only is it adorable, I'll use it all the time!

The teachers gave all of the kids buckets full of summer goodies, and they made each parent a personlized scrapbook full of photos from the year.  Its very detailed and something I'll keep forever to remember his first year of preschool.  Love you, buddy!

fresh basil pesto

We have a ton of fresh basil and parsley in the garden right now, along with fresh broccoli.  So tonight, I decided to make homemade pesto, and used it as my sauce with rigatoni pasta with the fresh blanched broccoli, shrimp, grape tomatoes and ricotta cheese.  Absolutely delicious.  Get the freshest herbs you can get, the flavors of grinding it all up together with the nuts and garlic is incredible.   Its a great alternative to red sauce and while herbs are fresh and in season, why not?

Fresh Basil Pesto

3/4 cup fresh basil leaves
1/4 cup fresh parsley
3/4 cup walnuts
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
2 or 3 peeled cloves of garlic
2 TBSP grated parmesan cheese
salt and pepper

In a food processor or small food chopper, blend together basil and parsley leaves, nuts, garlic, and cheese. Pour in oil slowly while still mixing. Stir in salt and pepper.  Great as bruschetta spread on bread, or mixed with any kind of pasta (add ricotta cheese to make it a creamy pesto sauce, delicious!).

first ever camping adventure

We met up with my brother and SIL, and my neice and nephew, over the weekend for our first attempt at camping with kids.  My family camped all the time when I was a kid, and I can still remember those trips with our pop-up camper, Dad cussing up a storm when the crank broke, grilling out and being filthy.  We thought since Logan is finally old enough (in other words, sleeps well and is potty trained), we'd give it a try this  year.   Our friends invited us to go here this fall with a whole group of families.  Its about four hours away.  So we figured we get our feet wet with this whole camping thing a little closer to home first.... get used to our tent, figure out what we needed to pack, how to cook in the great outdoors, etc.  My brother is an expert camper, ex-Boy Scout and has served as a trained mountain rescue volunteer, so we were in good hands.  And not only is he handy at a campsite, he can tell a heck of a campfire story.

For this first little trip, we kept it simple and booked a site at the Harpers Ferry, West Virginia KOA.  Only about an hour from us, very clean, lots for kids to do...   There are different levels of camping and I knew I needed to be at the level that involved electricity so I could have a fan running in the tent at night.  The level that has flushable toilets close by, running water and a swimming pool.  The level that includes queen size air mattresses.  Hey, at least I know and accept my limitations right?

The boys were SO excited about this trip, and are already asking when we can go again.  Despite a  torrential rain storm and a hovering cloud of gnats surrounding our every move, it was a great weekend.  We took notes and will probably change a few things we pack for next time, but Andrew really took the lead on the whole gear set up/break down thing thank goodness.  We had everything we needed and more, and it was nice to be somewhat 'unplugged' and just spend time with each other.  We met some really nice people, and although it took a lot of scrubbing to get the mud out from under the boys toenails last night, I'm pretty sure we'll be planning another camping trip soon.

We weren't their for long before we had four little monkeys in our tent:

The campground had a ton for kids to do, including a movie theatre and a game room which the boys hit full force.

Andrew hustled the kids at pool (and I think he only got hit in the nuts with a pool stick once!).

Our home away from home.  Andrew fashioned a tarp shelter off the back of his truck.  Here is a glance of it during the day and then at night.

The kids loved wearing their head lamps at night... they kind of looked like tiny gynocologists.

 Pickle, anyone?

Hanging in the hammock.

What's camping without a little mini golf?

Next, it was onto the giant jumping pillow.

Logan decided it would be fun to fill up his socks with sand and then put them back on his feet.  This from a kid who refused to walk in the sand when he was a toddler.

Uncle Chris and Andrew showed the kids how its done.

The kids made their own trail mix (or in Dylan's case, a baggie of M&M's).

It was starting to look like rain, so we hurried to make s'mores before the raindrops fell.

When it finally started to rain, it wasn't kidding. The skies opened up and dumped for hours.  Our neighbors had constructed an entire city of tents and tarps, and invited us to come watch "What About Bob" on their 6 foot screen, while we enjoyed drinks and dryness.  Had it not been for them, we would have all been huddled under our tarp listening to our iPod and swapping campfire stories.  Which would have been fine, except for like a jackass, I didn't bring a single waterproof article of shoes or clothing and I was freezing!

Now, this is my kind of camping!

We stayed pretty dry that night, and it was even a little cozy laying in the tent listening to the rain.  It made for some soggy, muddy packing up camp in the morning and our garage is currently The Land of Hanging Camping Stuff to Dry.  We got home yesterday and made hot soup, took hot showers and naps.

I don't know that I'll ever be a real honest to goodness wilderness junkie.  But going away for two nights like we did, 'roughing' it, was pretty fun.  As long as I have my pillow and electric fan.

the great outdoors

Tylenol PM, bug spray, swimsuits, high speed fan, coconut rum, suncreen and PB&J. Fishing poles, frisbees, air mattresses, pillows, hand sanitizer, s'mores ingredients and iPods.  Chips, toilet paper, plastic cutlery, tent, tarps, tackle box, cooler, various ropes and tools and gadgets I have no idea what they're for....

If we aren't home from camping by Sunday night, someone call 911.

3 wishes

After dinner out last night, Dylan and Logan were throwing coins into a water fountain.  Dylan made three wishes, and we come home.  After his shower, I asked him what his three wishes were.  In this exact order, this is what he told me:

1. I wished that my new Wall*E Wii game would come in the mail (we ordered it last week).

2. I wished I could do whatever I want, whenever I wanted.

3.  I wish that you would never, ever die, actually (which he still pronounces actual-weee.  And these days Logan starts every sentence with actuall-weeeeeee too).

Its an interesting study into the priorities of a 7 year old boy, right?

ebbs and flows

I've been avoiding blogging this week, because sometimes you just don't know what to say.  Because writing about laughing with my kids, or a recipe or a TV show, or those stupid Silly Bandz that are all the rage at elementary schools right now driving the teachers batty, seems so trivial compared to what a close friend is going through.  Sometimes, there just aren't enough words to even scrape the surface of the sorrow you feel for a friend.

So to my beautiful friend who is having a hard time this week.  I'm so sorry.  You will find the strength to get through all of this and you will see the sun again soon.  I love you.

And to my Tatertown friend, who is adding another member to her family tomorrow, good luck and we can't wait to meet your new little tatertot soon.

jerk chicken sandwiches and roasted carrot salad

Shopping at the Wegman's today, as I do every Friday, and wondering what the heck to make for dinner tonight.  I feel like we eat so many of the same meals over and over.  I decided to go with a new salad recipe, and a warm sandwich.   I subscribe to a recipe-a-day email from various websites and this one came a while back.  I held onto it, thinking it sounded interesting...

Utterly delicious.  So flavorful. When you roast the carrots, they get so sweet and the flavor contrast between the sweet carrots, bitter arugula and blue cheese is fantastic.

At Wegman’s, in the cheese department, they sell a Danish crumbled blue cheese with dried cranberries in it. Perfect for this recipe!

Serves 6, but I didn’t use this much carrots or arugula, kept everything else the same and it was a hearty 3 or 4 servings.   Would be great to take to a picnic, there's nothing that would spoil and its really pretty with the orange carrots and deep green arugula.  I wish I had taken a photo but we ate it all!

Roasted Carrot Salad

• 2 pounds carrots, peeled and thinly sliced on the diagonal

• 1/2 cup slivered almonds

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

• salt and ground black pepper to taste

• 1 teaspoon honey

• 1 tablespoon cider vinegar

• 1/3 cup dried cranberries

• 1 (4 ounce) package crumbled Danish blue cheese  (this seemed like a lot to me, I used maybe 2 or 3 oz and it was perfect and not too overbearing)

• 2 cups arugula

1. Preheat an oven to 400 degrees F.

2. Combine the carrots, almonds, and garlic in a mixing bowl. Drizzle with the olive oil, then season to taste with salt and pepper. Spread out onto an ungreased baking sheet.

3. Bake the carrots in the preheated oven until soft and the edges turn brown, about 30 minutes. Remove and allow to cool to room temperature.

4. Once cool, return the carrots to the mixing bowl, and drizzle with honey and vinegar; toss until coated. Add the cranberries and blue cheese; toss again until evenly mixed. Combine with the arugula and serve immediately.

Jerk Chicken Sandwiches
I cooked 3 chicken breasts in my crockpot on high for 4 hours with 1 can of chicken broth.   Shredded the chicken with a fork, and added this AWESOME jerk sauce (made by Tropical Pepper Company, who also makes my new favorite condiment, which is also great on this sandwich!).   Got some fresh delicious sandwich rolls at the Wegman's bakery and wa-la, dinner was served.    Yummy, yummy, yummy.

By the way, I love cooking a few chicken breasts in chicken broth in the crockpot and shredding it up... it shreds so easily and is so moist (as moist as eating dark meat but much more healthy), and you can do so many things with it you can't go wrong.   Use it for chicken salad, add some salsa for shredded chicken tacos, chicken tortilla soup, enchiladas, the list goes on...  Just spray your crockpot with nonstick spray, add a can of chicken broth for every 3 chicken breasts, you can't screw it up and clean up is so easy.

Dylanisms

What makes life so fun with kids is you never know what's going to come out of their mouths.

Last night, we pull up to the soccer field for Dylan's practice.   No idea what field we're supposed to be on, kids everywhere.   He and I are both visually scanning the fields for someone familiar...

All of the sudden, out of the blue:

Dylan:  "Where the HELL are we?!"

Me:  "What did you say?  Where did you learn that word??   Was it Grandpa Joe?  Was it from me?"

Dylan:  "Nah... Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs."

Ha!!!!   He's right, Mike Rowe says that all the time!  Dylan's been a big Dirty Jobs fan for years and here I've been thinking he's learned some pretty cool stuff on that show, like what happens to our trash after the truck picks it up, how to catch snakes, how to artificially inseminate a cow (okay, just kidding, we banned some episodes)....

Then later, as Dylan and I are waiting in the car outside of a store for Andrew and Logan to come out.

All of the sudden, out of the blue from the backseat:

Dylan:  "Mom, I'm pretty lucky to have you.  You're pretty great."

Ahhhhh.   Makes it all worth it.   I love that kid.

parenthood

I really only watch TV one night a week. The weeknights are busy and after dinner, if we aren't at soccer or some other activity, we're outside. Other nights, Andrew and I will rent a movie and I also just started reading this. There aren't a lot of TV shows worth much, in my opinion.

My favorite show of all time was the HBO series, Six Feet Under, which ended a few years ago. It was edgy, provocative and was written by one of the greatest TV writers ever, Alan Ball. It was intense, darkly funny and had a great cast.

I didn't think there could ever be a show I enjoyed as much, especially on network TV.

A few months ago, I tuned into the premiere show of Parenthood, a new drama on NBC that is loosely written as a continuation of the 1989 Ron Howard movie Parenthood. I've always loved that movie, even before I became a parent. Its funny, touching and has some great dialogue. I especially love this brilliant metaphor of life and parenthood.

Ron Howard is one of the creators of the new Parenthood and the stories are modernized progressions of the storylines from the original movie. The casting is great... Peter Krause (who was also in Six Feet Under), Lauren Graham, Dax Shepard, Craig T. Nelson... And the struggles and triumphs of this family come over as real life, emotional and current. In the show, Peter Krause's son has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. Next to that old show, Life Goes On, I don't remember a show ever featuring a disability that hundreds of thousands of families are living with every day. The writing is warm and intelligent...its not over the top, gimmicky or exaggerated. Its tender and bold at the same time.

There is something for everyone in this show, and the music is really great too (you can find a listing of music per episode here).

I'm usually an early to bed kinda girl, but this is one show worth staying up for (yes, I know I could record it, but it comes on right after Glee ends and I've already mentioned I'm a big Gleek).

Tuesday night TV rocks, even if I'm a little sleepy come Wednesday mornings.

U2 and soccer and Mother's Day, oh my!

We had a very busy weekend this past weekend, and we've all been trying to catch up on sleep for the past two nights.

We packed in the fun, starting with Friday night.  We went to the first summer outdoor concert in the area to see one of our favorites, 2U (the U2 Tribute band we raved about and saw twice last summer).  They're great and I got my U2 fix.  Is there any band greater than U2?  I think not.

Saturday morning, it was off to Dylan's soccer game and then some yard saling and errands.  Which morphed into having a couple of our soccer friends over for dinner.   7 boys total and they had a blast.  When you put 7 boys around the table you hear all kinds of bodily noises and talk about ghosts and who can drink the most lemonade.  They were all exhausted by the end of the night.

Sunday after brunch at home, it was off to spend the day at Grandma Lynn and Grandpa Robby's, with Uncle Chris, Aunt Jessica, and cousins Josh and Maya.  It was sunny and breezy, perfect for a little fishing in the pond near their house.

All the kids caught exactly one fish.  One of the fish didn't make it, and the kids witnessed a big turtle swim up to the surface to gulp it down.  It was a fun afternoon.

First Josh caught his fish...

Then Maya...

Then Logan..

And finally, Dylan..

Next it was back inside to Grandma's for a bbq and lots of playing.   Great way to spend Mother's Day, with two mothers I love and adore and look up to very much.

dangling

The other day, the boys got busy after school working on some Mother's Day presents.  They love painting and I thought they'd enjoy decorating some terra cotta flowerpots for some special people in their lives.  We're planning on planting some pretty pink flowers in them this weekend.

While they were busy being little Picasso's, I was sweeping some crumbs up under the table and noticed how cute their feet looked, dangling and adorned by the new Crocs Grandma bought them while we were away last week.

It won't be much longer until Dylan's feet reach all the way to the ground, and the dangling days are over. I think they both grew three inches taller while we were away!

Preschool Mothers Day Tea

Today, I got to join the other moms of Logans' classmates for a very cute little Mothers Day celebration at preschool.

We had snacks and stories...

And we received very sweet, wonderful Mothers Day presents from our kids...

Best of all, we even got serenaded.

helping me not miss the islands so much

I'm slowly re-adjusting to life back on the 'mainland'.  There are laundry piles to attend to, errands to run, meals to make, PTA meetings to attend, homework to do, a broken A/C to get repaired, and grocery shopping to be done.  I can't get enough snuggles with the kids, and I'm still feeling very zen and relaxed.

One of the nice things about the island was the fresh fruit, and I was thrilled today to find some yummy produce at Wegman's to liven up our meals this week.  It would be hard to come home to cold snowy weather in the winter.  At least its now spring and the produce is starting to look and taste impressive.  We also have a ton of salad greens that have sprung up in our garden...more than we can even eat.  Come on over if you want some salad.  My stepsister and her husband also gave us some beautiful healthy tomato plants leftover from the President's garden (Jay is a gardener at the White House).  Can't wait for those to start coming in.

Artichokes were only 50 cents!

Juicy, sweet and $2.99 for 2 pounds!

a little island time

Andrew and I just returned from a five day getaway to Nassau Bahamas... celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary, partaking in the award trip his lovely coworkers nominated him for a few months ago and spending a few days of R&R, sans kids for the first time in a very long time.   We left the boys in my Moms hands and while they got to spend special time with her, we enjoyed a little time in paradise.

Five days of no negotiating, no cleaning, no cooking.  No homework, no kid food, no wiping butts.  No nightly visitors at 3 am complaining of a bad dream.  No telling anyone 12 times to brush their teeth.  No laundry, no waking at 6 am to get anyone to the bus stop.

I love my life at home, I do.  I'm not complaining.  I'm thankful that I have this priviledge to stay home with the boys and manage our home.

But everyone needs  a break from their job.  And I think especially so when you're 'employees' sometimes talk back to you, and have to constantly be reminded to clean up their messes.  I missed them like crazy, but this vacation filled something in me that was starting to run a little empty.  It was needed.  And we're so thankful we had the chance to go.

I took a LOT of photos and I can't possibly put them all here.  But I've uploaded them all to Facebook as well as here.   You can click on this Shutterfly link without being a Shutterfly member or having to take time to create any sort of password and easily view the entire album.

Here are a few teaser photos...   It was just lovely.  Lovely.

And now you'll have to excuse me for a few days while my head comes down out of the clouds.
